Ningyo are mermaids that live in the depths of Shinkami Dao. They feature a female humanoid face although exhibit distinctive aquatic features. Their scaly arms end in clawed and webbed hands and they propel themselves through the water with powerful fins. They are extremely rare and can be incredibly dangerous if threatened. While they are not intelligent enough to speak or form societies, they do exhibit enough to understand humans and their emotions. Many stories have been told of the Ningyo, often times they rescue shipwrecked sailors, carrying them to shore and to safety, other times they lure sailors with their humanoid faces before supposedly drowning them and eating them. For the most part they avoid humans as many have begun to hunt the Ningyo. Superstitions have been told that consuming a Ningyo's flesh could lead to eternal long life or a short and cursed death. While no one has lived an exceptionally long life, the flesh of the Ningyo can be deadly if not prepared properly which is how the stories started. The rarity of these creatures and the fact that they are intelligent enough to hide from humans has made their meat an exceptionally rare delicacy. If caught or cornered, they will do anything to escape such as biting and clawing their captors and dragging them overboard to drown them making hunting them a very dangerous job.
